FINCALCPRIME GUIDE

Learn how a SIP calculator works, what inputs it needs, and how to use it to plan your monthly investments for goals like buying a house, child's education, or retirement. Includes a guide on how much SIP to start for ₹1 crore.

A SIP calculator is one of the most powerful and beginner-friendly tools in personal finance. Whether you are saving for your child's higher education, a dream home down payment, or a comfortable retirement, a SIP calculator helps you answer the most critical question: how much do I need to invest every month to reach my goal?

What is a SIP Calculator?

A SIP (Systematic Investment Plan) calculator is an online tool that estimates the future value of your monthly mutual fund investments. It uses the Future Value of Annuity formula to account for the effect of compounding over time. Unlike a simple savings calculator, a SIP calculator factors in that each monthly instalment earns returns independently from the month it is invested so your very first SIP instalment compounds the longest.

How Does a SIP Calculator Work?

The SIP calculator requires three inputs:

  • Monthly Investment Amount (₹): The fixed amount you plan to invest each month, starting from as low as ₹500.
  • Expected Annual Return (%): The anticipated rate of return from your chosen mutual fund category. Equity funds historically average 10–14% annually over the long term; debt funds average 6–8%.
  • Investment Duration (Years): The total period for which you plan to stay invested the longer the better, due to the power of compounding.

The calculator then instantly shows you the Maturity Amount (total corpus), the Total Principal Invested, and the Total Returns Earned giving you a complete picture of how your money grows.

SIP Calculator Formula

The formula behind every SIP calculator is:

M = P × { [ (1 + r)^n – 1 ] / r } × (1 + r)
Where: M = Maturity Amount, P = Monthly SIP Amount, r = Monthly Interest Rate (Annual Rate ÷ 12), n = Total Number of Months

For example, a monthly SIP of ₹5,000 for 20 years at 12% p.a. grows to approximately ₹49.96 Lakhs on a total investment of just ₹12 Lakhs. The remaining ₹37.96 Lakhs is pure compounding gain.

How Much SIP Do You Need for ₹1 Crore?

Target Corpus Time Horizon Monthly SIP Required
₹1 Crore 10 Years ₹43,000/month
₹1 Crore 15 Years ₹20,000/month
₹1 Crore 20 Years ₹10,000/month
₹1 Crore 25 Years ₹5,300/month
₹50 Lakhs 15 Years ₹10,000/month
₹2 Crore 20 Years ₹20,000/month

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Using a SIP Calculator

  1. Using an unrealistic return rate: Assuming 18–20% returns is overly optimistic. Use 10–12% for equity and 6–7% for debt funds for conservative, realistic projections.
  2. Ignoring inflation: A corpus of ₹1 Crore in 20 years will have less purchasing power than ₹1 Crore today. Always set your goal amount accounting for inflation (typically 6% in India).
  3. Not accounting for taxes: Long-term capital gains (LTCG) on equity mutual funds above ₹1 Lakh per year are taxed at 12.5%. Factor this in when planning your post-tax returns.
"A SIP calculator doesn't just show you numbers it shows you possibilities. Use it to find the monthly investment that fits your budget today and builds the life you want tomorrow."
