The EPFO has declared the EPF interest rate for FY 2026-27. Learn the current rate, how EPF interest is calculated, when it is credited, tax implications, and how to maximise your EPF corpus for retirement.

The Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) is the cornerstone of retirement savings for India's salaried workforce. Every month, both the employee and employer contribute to this fund, and the accumulated corpus earns a government-declared interest rate. For FY 2026-27, the EPFO (Employees' Provident Fund Organisation) has declared the EPF interest rate here is everything you need to know.

EPF Interest Rate for FY 2026-27

The EPFO Central Board of Trustees has recommended an EPF interest rate of 8.25% per annum for FY 2026-27. This rate is subject to ratification by the Ministry of Finance before it is officially credited to member accounts. The rate remains competitive among guaranteed-return fixed income instruments available in India.

Financial Year EPF Interest Rate
FY 2026-27 8.25% p.a.
FY 2025-26 8.25% p.a.
FY 2024-25 8.25% p.a.
FY 2023-24 8.25% p.a.
FY 2022-23 8.15% p.a.

How EPF Contributions Work

Both the employee and employer contribute 12% of the employee's Basic Salary + Dearness Allowance (DA) each month.

  • Employee's 12%: Entirely goes into the EPF account.
  • Employer's 12%: Split into two parts 3.67% goes to EPF, and 8.33% goes to the Employee Pension Scheme (EPS). Note: EPS contribution is capped at ₹1,250/month for employees earning above ₹15,000 basic salary.

How EPF Interest is Calculated

EPF interest is calculated on a monthly running balance but credited annually at the end of the financial year (March 31). The formula is:

Monthly Interest = (Opening Balance for the Month × Annual Interest Rate) ÷ 12
Total annual interest = Sum of all 12 monthly interest calculations

Importantly, contributions made in a given month start earning interest from the beginning of the following month. So an April contribution earns interest starting May.

EPF Tax Benefits

EPF enjoys full EEE (Exempt-Exempt-Exempt) tax status, subject to limits:

  • Contribution tax benefit: Employee's EPF contribution up to ₹1,50,000/year is deductible under Section 80C.
  • Interest tax exemption: Interest on EPF is tax-free, provided the employee's total EPF contribution does not exceed ₹2.5 Lakh per year. Contributions above ₹2.5 Lakh annually will have the interest taxed at applicable income tax slab rates.
  • Maturity tax exemption: The entire EPF withdrawal after 5 or more years of continuous service is completely tax-free. Premature withdrawal before 5 years is taxable.

When is EPF Interest Credited?

EPFO typically credits the declared interest rate to member accounts between December and March of the following financial year, once the rate is ratified by the Ministry of Finance. For example, interest for FY 2025-26 was credited to accounts by early 2026. Members can check their updated EPF balance on the EPFO Member Portal (passbook.epfindia.gov.in) or via the UMANG app.

Voluntary Provident Fund (VPF): Boost Your EPF Returns

Employees who want to invest more than the mandatory 12% can contribute additionally through the Voluntary Provident Fund (VPF). VPF earns the same EPF interest rate of 8.25% and enjoys identical tax benefits. You can contribute up to 100% of your Basic + DA into VPF, making it an excellent debt instrument for salaried employees seeking guaranteed, tax-efficient returns.

"For salaried employees, the EPF + VPF combination is one of the most underutilised wealth-building tools in India. An 8.25% guaranteed, tax-free return beats most fixed income alternatives available in the market."
