Pursuing higher education whether at a premier Indian institution like an IIT or IIM, or at a university abroad often requires an education loan. With tuition fees rising steeply every year, education loans in India now range from ₹5 Lakhs to ₹1.5 Crore or more for overseas programmes. Before you sign on the dotted line, it is critical to understand how your EMI is calculated, what your total repayment obligation will be, and how to minimise your interest burden.
How is Education Loan EMI Calculated?
Education loan EMI is calculated using the standard reducing balance EMI formula:
EMI = P × r × (1 + r)^n / [ (1 + r)^n – 1 ]
Where: P = Loan principal, r = Monthly interest rate (Annual rate ÷ 12), n = Repayment tenure in months
However, education loans have a unique feature: a moratorium period (also called the repayment holiday) during which you are not required to pay EMIs. This typically covers the course duration plus 6 to 12 months after completing the course or getting a job, whichever is earlier. Interest accrues during this moratorium period and is added to the principal.
Education Loan EMI Examples: India vs Abroad
| Loan Amount | Interest Rate | Repayment Tenure | Monthly EMI | Total Interest Paid |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ₹10 Lakhs (India) | 9.5% p.a. | 10 years | ≈ ₹12,940 | ≈ ₹5.53 Lakhs |
| ₹30 Lakhs (India) | 10% p.a. | 12 years | ≈ ₹35,940 | ≈ ₹21.75 Lakhs |
| ₹60 Lakhs (Abroad) | 11% p.a. | 15 years | ≈ ₹68,140 | ≈ ₹62.65 Lakhs |
| ₹1 Crore (Abroad) | 11.5% p.a. | 15 years | ≈ ₹1,17,000 | ≈ ₹1.11 Crore |
As the table shows, the total interest on a large overseas education loan can exceed the principal itself making it essential to choose the right tenure, interest rate, and repayment strategy.
Interest Rates on Education Loans in India (2026)
Education loan interest rates vary significantly by lender, loan amount, and collateral:
- Public Sector Banks (SBI, Bank of Baroda, PNB): 8.5% – 11.15% p.a. (lowest rates, especially for premier institution students)
- Private Banks (HDFC, Axis, ICICI): 11% – 14.5% p.a.
- NBFCs (Avanse, Credila, InCred): 12% – 15% p.a.
- Government Subsidy Schemes: Under the Central Sector Interest Subsidy Scheme (CSIS), economically weaker section students get full interest subsidy during the moratorium period.
Tax Benefit on Education Loan: Section 80E
One of the most valuable and least discussed tax benefits in India is Section 80E, which allows a full deduction on the interest paid on an education loan for higher studies:
- There is no upper limit on the deduction amount 100% of interest paid is deductible.
- The deduction is available for 8 consecutive years starting from the year you begin repayment.
- The loan must be taken from a financial institution or approved charitable institution (not from friends or family).
- The loan can be for the education of the taxpayer, spouse, children, or a student for whom the taxpayer is a legal guardian.
For a borrower in the 30% tax bracket paying ₹6 Lakhs in interest annually, Section 80E saves ₹1.8 Lakhs in tax every year effectively reducing the net borrowing cost significantly.
Smart Repayment Strategies for Education Loans
- Pay interest during the moratorium: Even though you are not required to pay EMIs during the course, paying at least the interest component prevents it from being capitalised into the principal. This can save lakhs over the full tenure.
- Choose the shortest affordable tenure: A 10-year tenure costs significantly less in total interest than a 15-year tenure, even if the monthly EMI is higher. Use our EMI calculator to find your optimal tenure.
- Make part-prepayments from your first salary: Direct a portion of your early salary towards loan prepayment. Most banks do not charge foreclosure penalties on education loans with floating rates.
- Claim Section 80E every year: Ensure your employer is aware of your education loan so interest is considered in your Form 16, or claim it while filing your ITR to reduce your tax liability.
